Excellent Service Paradigm
More than 3,000 Alpha Kappa Alpha members met in New Orleans in July 2007 for the organization's biennial Leadership Conference and to support the region's post-hurricane economic revitalization effort.
Participants received intensive expert instruction on how to be a leader and how to equip local members with the tools to help serve their communities effectively.
Members—including several who lost their homes in Hurricanes Katrina and Rita—also provided a helping hand to neighborhood residents. Alpha Kappa Alpha made history as the first sorority or fraternity sponsor of a house in partnership with the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity. In a similar partnership with Habitat for Humanity Gulf Coast, the Sorority also presented keys to a new home to a family in Gulfport, MS.
Conference highlights included:
- Donation of an Alpha Kappa Alpha-Habitat for Humanity-sponsored 5-bedroom house to Katina and Raynard Willis and their six children in Gulfport, MS and to Lugenia Raphell and her mother in Louisiana's Orleans Parish;
- Presentation of $150,000 in scholarships and community assistance awards by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Educational Advancement Foundation to individuals and organizations, including $5,000 each to Shuqui and Syshe Autrey—daughters of Wesley Autrey, Sr., who risked his life to save a fellow New Yorker by jumping on a subway train track; and
- Presentation of awards to Illinois Senate President Emit Jones, Jr. and John Tyson, CEO of Tyson Foods, both of whom have sponsored initiatives supporting the Sorority's service platforms and are considered examples of "leadership excellence."
